Chevy Chase Village is a picturesque community that has more features of city life, even though it is just outside the District of Columbia. The engaging neighborhood is loyal to its commercial center along "The Avenue", and proud of its eclectic architecture from the early 20th century.
Chevy Chase was one of the first streetcar suburbs in Washington DC. A rail line that ran up Connecticut Avenue from downtown enabled this transition from pastoral farmland to comfortable homes with front yards and sidewalks within a few short years. Today, residents of Chevy Chase still work in official Washington or nearby Bethesda, are politically engaged, and value the small town feel of their neighborhood.
The streets are quiet, there is lots of greenery and the community feels strong.
It's a nice, relaxed area with friendly people and a lot of beautiful plant life. Chevy Chase is a peaceful suburb with plenty of stores and parks to visit nearby. Located in Montgomery County, residents have access to both Rockville and downtown Washington, DC. There are many good schools near the neighborhood.
Taking a trip up Connecticut Ave into Chevy Chase, will give a glimpse into a more suburban and rather wealthy part of town, with large well tended houses and manicured lawns. From Connecticut, take a right on Military Ave. Essentially, from there to Rock Creek Park, the area between Military Rd. and Western Ave. to the North, is Chevy Chase, DC and North of Western to Connecticut and on to Wisconsin is Chevy Chase, MD. It's a quiet area with impeccable gardens that is worth visiting to get a glimpse at another facet, more suburban of the capital.
Relaxing in a hectic city.
Chevy Chase was noted as "the most educated town in America" in a study conducted by the Stanford Graduate School of Education, with 93.5 percent of adult residents having at least a bachelor's degree.
The neighborhood is very quiet and peaceful and the people are friendly. Nice atmosphere with the greenery that surrounds the streets and sidewalks, and since it is farther away from the main street, there is rarely any noise.
The condominiums are located in single-family homes.
Chevy Chase is not cheap. The average house in Chevy Chase MD is about 1.2 million dollars while Chevy Chase D.C. is about 900,000 dollars. Both neighborhoods are extremely exclusive.
There is a wide variety of homes to choose from that were built in the early 1900s. Most condo buildings are located on Connecticut Avenue near the small cluster of local shops and restaurants.
While there’s a smattering of condo buildings along Connecticut Avenue, the vast majority of residential options in Chevy Chase DC are single-family homes. Most houses are relatively large, particularly by District standards, and just about all are fronted by well-groomed gardens and lawns of varying sizes. Home styles tend to reflect the area’s growth. The oldest houses—and some of the most sought after—are located in the blocks close to Connecticut Avenue and were built in styles popular in the early 20th century: bungalows, four squares, and the odd Victorian. The farther east one goes from the area's main strip, the more colonials, Tudors, and Cape Cods one can see; close to the park, the area is dotted with post war homes.Chevy Chase is a great place to live, especially for someone who commutes to DC. It's safe, family friendly and has plenty of options for shopping and other needs, especially with Bethesda Row nearby.
It's a safe neighborhood, and it's easy to walk to a lot of different shops or restaurants.
Chevy Chase consists of two parts - the older village and the newer shopping and housing area. Both are clustered around Chevy Chase Circle with its fountain and grassland. A wander around the old village shows some interesting old and large houses. The newer area is clustered mainly around Connecticut Avenue and is close to the major shopping area of Friendship Heights. However, there are some interesting little shops and restaurants in Chevy Chase.
An active nightlife.
This is a family oriented neighborhood and does not have much to offer in terms of nightlife. There are not many high rise apartments here, and not as many young professionals live here as in other parts of DC. This is an expensive area mostly for well off families.
The comforts of home and the convenience of city life.
Chevy Chase is close enough to downtown DC that you can enjoy all it has to offer, while being far enough away from the city noise to live peacefully.
Chevy Chase DC, the well-known suburb-in-the-city, is a place with gorgeous houses on well-appointed lawns, a strong community connection, and a large enough commercial stretch to make it feel relatively self-sufficient. But be careful not to mistake the far northwest DC neighborhood for Chevy Chase, Md. By and large, residents on the District side still see themselves as urban dwellers, like those who developed the area intended.
The area is remarkably safe, streets are clean, quiet, and lined with tall hardwoods, and residents are primarily those who came to the neighborhood to raise a family or retire there once that portion of their life is over. Running along Connecticut Avenue just south of Chevy Chase Circle is a three-block stretch of cafes, restaurants, and locally-owned businesses that are just a few minutes walk from many residents' homes.
Notable local businesses like the Magruders supermarket, the Avalon Theater, the American City Diner, and Safeway have been there for decades. Located just beyond the neighborhood’s western edge is the Friendship Heights commercial strip, which has in the last decade become one of the Washington area’s high-end shopping districts with stores like Tiffany and Saks Fifth Avenue opening up. The stretch also has two malls, a Whole Foods, as well as a number of chain restaurants like the Cheesecake Factory and Maggiano’s Little Italy. Today, Chevy Chase DC is a pleasant neighborhood where well-off (not necessarily loaded) individuals can find some peace and community, while remaining in close touch with the rest of the city to the south.
