Apple Goes to Bat for the App Store:

Yesterday, Apple (-0.48%) launched a website dedicated to welcoming competition and reiterating the principles and practices of its App Store. It’s Apple’s way of telling its haters, “You’re entitled to your wrong opinion.”

The backstory: Apple’s been in hot regulatory water over its App Store, which is the only way for most people to buy and sell iPhone apps.

  • Two weeks ago, the Supreme Court ruled consumers can go ahead with an antitrust suit claiming Apple benefits from a monopoly in the iPhone app marketplace.

Apple’s denied those allegations, suggesting its 20 million developers (who’ve pocketed $120 billion in App Store payouts to date) benefit from the way it runs the App Store. Now, Apple’s using its new real estate to highlight superstar apps, like Spotify, that compete directly with Apple’s homemade services, like Apple Music.

Timing is everything: 1) Apple’s facing an EU antitrust complaint from app developers who alleged Apple targeted their work for competing with its own Screen Time service. 2) As we mentioned, Apple’s developer conference is next week.
